Let the wild rumpus start!

Community Helpers Storytime

Scott Bahlmann

This was put together in honor of Mr. Rogers birthday.

Opening: Shake My Sillies Out – Raffi

Book: Hardworking puppies – Lynn Reiser

hardworkingpuppies

(This is a bit long for storytime, so we focused on the subtraction aspect, and it went over pretty well. A parent asked to borrow it afterwards!)

Activity: Tools We Work With- Matching

jobscareers

(We identified each job as we put it up, and then showed the tools in a different order, and let the kids identify which job it went with.)

Rolling pin- Chef, Seeds - Farmer, Hammer - Construction Worker, Soccer Ball - Athlete, Letter - Postal Worker, Band aid - Doctor, Book - Librarian

jobscareerstools

(This was a fun activity, our librarian was a 'storyteller' though, which I didn't mind at all! )

Book: Fire Fighter Piggywiggy – Christyan and Diane Fox

firefighterpiggywiggy

(Bright simple illustrations and big blocky text make this a great series, just the right length for storytime.)

Activity: Hurry, hurry, drive the firetruck…

Hurry, hurry drive the fire truck, (hands on steering wheel) Hurry, hurry, drive the fire truck, Hurry, hurry, drive the fire truck, Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. (ring bell)

Hurry, hurry, turn the corner, (lean to the right) Hurry, hurry, turn the corner, (lean to the left) Hurry, hurry, turn the corner, Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. (ring bell)

Hurry, hurry, climb the ladder....(climb the ladder)

Hurry, hurry, spray the water hose  (wave arms side to side) Slowly, slowly, back to the fire station.... (lean slowly to the left and to the right)

BRRRRRRRING!! Sounds like another fire, ready to do it again?!

(After Piggy Wiggy pretended to be a fireman, we had to as well! A great get-the-wiggles out song, it left me worn out!)

Book: Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus – Mo Willems

dont-let-the-pigeon-drive-the-bus

(Pigeon wants to drive too, but not the firetruck. Always a hit.)

Activity: Pigeon Wants to Find a Job

pigeonwantstofind

I think it would be nice to let pigeon drive something, let's see if we can guess what he'll be driving today!

Tune: Do You Know the Muffin Man?

Pigeon wants to find a job, find a job, find a job.

Pigeon wants to find a job, what will he be today?

pigeonfindsjob

(The kids love guessing games, and this was a hit. They guessed so well we had to play a couple of times.)   =]

Book: Smash! Mash! Crash! There Goes the Trash – Barbara Odanaka

SMASH_jacketmedium

(A fun, bright, noisy book!)

Activity: Instruments

(Then we let the kids make their own noise with instruments, and did they ever!)
